The villa is set,
at the back of the village, in a 750 square metre plot in
an old olive grove, with mature olive, lemon, orange and peach
trees. The garden at the back is shady even in high summer.
It is only 125
metres from the beach on a (very) gentle slope and 100 metres
from the nearest supermarket and taverna. A car is not necessary
for those who don't want to drive.
The airport is
about 45 minutes away.
Kalami is safe
for children. One quiet road and a long, shingle shelving
beach. A great place for children to have some independence
for the first time.
There is an excellent
water-ski school in Kalami and two boat hire companies. Book
well in advance for July and August.
Boat hire is very
popular at about £35.00 a day and the coastline spectacular
with many beachside tavernas and small coves to swim.

Kalami has several
tavernas, bars, mini-markets and two travel agencies for changing
money and buying excursion tickets.
There is a boat
service at night to 2 tavernas in nearby Agni, which is a
great way to go out to dinner and especially fun for the children.
Book and pay in advance.
There are no discos
in Kalami; it is quiet at night with life centering around
the various bars and tavernas. Apart from Greek night at Pepe's
Taverna and karaoke at one of the bars, it all winds down
by shortly after midnight. However, discos are available 20
minutes away by taxi in Ipsos (about 10 or so discos) and
10 minutes away in Kassiopi (2 discos) for those that want
something more!
Kalami is on the
'Corfu Trail'; a collection of walks encircling the island
for 220 kms. It provides for great walking in early and late
season when it is cooler.
The White House
in Kalami, with its taverna, is the former home of Lawrence
Durrell. He lived there with his wife from 1935 to 1939 and
wrote Prospero's Cell.
Kalami is 10 minutes
by car from popular Kaminaki, 15 minutes from Nissaki and
20 minutes from St Stephano and Kerasia.
Kouloura, one of
the most frequently photographed places on the island, is
just round the corner. That, too, has a lovely taverna overlooking
the harbour.
Boat hire is highly
recommended as you can see the spectacular coastline in comfort
and at your own speed. Tavernas abound along the coast and
you will always find your own little beach somewhere, even
in July and August.
For those who like
walking, Agni is 20 minutes, Kouloura 15 minutes, Kerasia
45 minutes, Krouzeri 35 minutes, Kaminaki 45 minutes. We do
not advise walking to any of these places at night, apart
from Kouloura as that is on the road. All the others are by
unlit coastal paths.
